So You Don't Know What Wine You Like Yet — Good. Neither Did We.

Here's a truth nobody in the wine world wants to admit out loud: most people who "love wine" spent years pretending to love wine before they actually figured out what they liked.

They nodded along at dinner parties. They ordered "whatever's good" at restaurants. They bought bottles based on which label looked the most trustworthy. (We see you, the one with the dog on it.)

And you know what? That's completely fine. Because wine is not a test. It's a journey — and the only wrong answer is the one you didn't enjoy drinking.

At The Wine Concierge, we built this entire boutique around one simple idea: wine should feel like a warm welcome, not a pop quiz. We curate every bottle with intention, sourcing from women winemakers, Black-owned producers, and minority-led estates who are making some of the most exciting, expressive wines in the world right now. And we want to help you find your wine — the one that makes you say, "Oh. That's what all the fuss is about."

So let's start at the very beginning.

Step One: Forget Everything You Think You Know

Wine culture has spent decades making people feel like outsiders. The fancy vocabulary, the swirling, the spitting — it's a lot. But here's the secret: your palate is already perfectly calibrated. You already know what you like. You just haven't connected those preferences to wine yet.

Do you love a cold glass of lemonade on a hot day? You might love a crisp, zesty Sauvignon Blanc or a sparkling wine with bright citrus notes. Do you reach for dark chocolate over milk chocolate? A bold, structured red might be your thing. Are you the person who orders the sweetest cocktail on the menu? A semi-sweet sparkling wine or a lightly sweet rosé could be your gateway.

See? You already know more than you think.

Step Two: Understand the Spectrum

Wine exists on a spectrum — from bone dry (no sweetness at all) to lusciously sweet (think dessert in a glass). Most wines fall somewhere in the middle, and your job right now is simply to figure out where you fall on that spectrum.

Here's a quick cheat sheet:

  • Dry wines have no residual sugar. They taste crisp, savory, or tannic. Think Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir.
  • Off-dry wines have just a whisper of sweetness — enough to soften the edges without tasting like candy. Think Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Vouvray.
  • Semi-sweet wines are noticeably sweet but still balanced. Think Moscato, Brachetto, some sparkling rosés.
  • Sweet wines are dessert wines — rich, concentrated, and meant to be sipped slowly. Think Port, Sauternes, Tawny.

Not sure where you land? Start in the middle. A lightly sparkling wine or a fruit-forward rosé is almost universally approachable and gives you a great baseline.

Step Three: Start with Sparkling

We know, we know — you thought sparkling wine was just for New Year's Eve. But here's the thing: sparkling wine is actually one of the most beginner-friendly categories in the entire wine world. The bubbles lift the flavors, the acidity keeps things fresh, and there's a style for every palate.

Our NV Jules Lorén Blanc de Blanc Brut Cuvée Réserve is our #1 bestselling sparkling wine for a reason. At just $14, it's 100% Chardonnay made in the traditional méthode champenoise — the same method used for Champagne — with notes of green apple, citrus, white flowers, and a subtle hint of brioche. It's elegant, approachable, and honestly? It makes a Tuesday feel like a celebration.

If you want something a little sweeter to ease in, our NV Cocchi Brachetto D'Acqui Sweet Sparkling Wine from Piedmont, Italy is pure joy in a glass. Think strawberry, rose petals, and delicate bubbles — it's like a dessert that also happens to be wine. At $22, it pairs beautifully with chocolate, berries, or honestly, just a good mood.

Step Four: Give Yourself Permission to Explore

The biggest mistake new wine drinkers make is deciding too early that they "don't like" a whole category. You had one bad Chardonnay at a work happy hour and now you've written off all white wine? We understand — but we'd gently push back on that.

Wine varies enormously based on where the grapes are grown, who made it, and how it was produced. A Chardonnay from Napa Valley tastes completely different from a Chardonnay from Burgundy, France. A Pinot Noir from Oregon is a different experience than one from South Africa. The grape is just the beginning of the story.

That's why we're here. We do the curation so you don't have to do the guesswork.

Step Five: Join the Journey

Over the next four blogs in this series, we're going to walk you through the major wine styles — whites, reds, rosés, and sparkling — with real recommendations from our curated collection. We'll talk about food pairings, what to look for on a label, and how to build confidence one sip at a time.

And remember: every bottle you order from The Wine Concierge ships free when you grab 6 or more bottles. So consider this your invitation to build your own little Sip School curriculum. 🎓🍷
